Yesterday I purchased one of these drives to use as a Network Attached Storage drive for my Sonos music system.

In essence, advanced users that want a NAS with a long list of features (email server, web server, more than one internal drive for redundancy) will need to look elsewhere. For instance, selecting “”WD Quickview”", followed by “”learning center”", and finally selecting the “”More Things to Do”" menu gives a page with no links telling you to refer to chapter 8, etc. It was also able to stream to my iPhone over my local wifi network using using the free DLNA client MLPlayer Lite.

The documentation included is sparse on how do do simple things such as sharing media through it’s built in DLNA server. Also, this drive comes pre-formatted with an NTFS file system so no reformatting is needed like with most external drives. It is designed with a purposefully limited number of options, which are just enough to make is useful for many people, without making it burdensome to use. only moderately helpful. The compromise is always between raw functionality with lots of options, and something that is simple to set up and use. This is a simple device that allows users to immediately have networked file space for storing content, backups and sharing that content (video/audio/images) with computers and other devices that support DLNA (such as the Xbox 360 and PS3) or sharing through iTunes.

The only interface provided on the box is ethernet. There is no USB ports for expanding storage. If your network is configured for DHCP the device will be immediately available.

Everything is managed through a web interface; installing the bundled software takes some of the guesswork out of finding the device itself.

The included help is….. There are portions that look like they were simply not finished., which would be helpful because the text on this page isn’t very helpful at all. Furthermore, there is no way to navigate back except by selecting the back button in the web browser. The logo at the top of the page isn’t a link to home. These are those little things that a good web designer would have spotted. Western Digital is using Twonky Media as it’s DLNA server software that is embedded in the Western Digital MyBook Live. It has been around for a while, and is available as a separate software product for a variety of platforms. It is reliable, and the device itself initiates video playback streams to my Xbox 360 fairly quickly. Again — the documentation is not complete on how to make use of this capability. At the end of the day, you drag all your media into one mounted volume (WD2K) and it just works.

But really the things I am talking about are those little extra things. It is a simple, non-obtrusive device that is fairly speedy over a local area network. It is ideal for home use. This drive is perfect for that setup and exceeded my expectations. The setup for this drive is a snap. My PC and Sonos system recognized it with zero issues. The drive throughput is about 70Mb/s which is plenty for my purposes. Also (and a key feature for Sonos), this drive will spin down after inactivity and will even let you set how long it waits before spinning down (have not seen any other drive in this price range which will do that). …(more about : western digital audio books)
